Open the Book Assemblies

A team of us from the Good Shepherd is involved in an exciting new initiative in the Maidenhead area called ‘Open the Book’.  Open the Book has been running very successfully in Gloucestershire for several years, and is now spreading to different parts of the country. There are now about twelve Open the Book teams going regularly into schools in Maidenhead.

The vision of Open the Book is to ‘enable every child to hear the story of the Bible in their primary years’.  The Bible stories are presented in a lively, accessible and enjoyable way with plenty of participation from the children. We use drama, mime, props and costumes to make the assemblies engaging and fun.  Reactions from both children and staff are generally very enthusiastic!

Volunteers from our church are involved in three different teams with people from All Saints, St Mary’s, and St Peter’s within our deanery, as well as members of St Mark’s and Cookham Methodist Churches.  We go into Larchfield Primary School in our neighbouring parish on Wednesday mornings, as well as Wessex Primary School (Tuesdays) and Manor Green School (Mondays) in our parish.  It is lovely to be able to work together with other churches and denominations on this project, and a wonderful opportunity to share the Bible with children.

Please pray for our Open the Book teams, and for the children and staff at Larchfield Primary School, Wessex Primary School and Manor Green School.  If you are interested in joining one of the teams, do contact us. All volunteers need to fulfil the relevant Child Protection requirements.
