Information for first-time visitors
This section is to help those who may be planning to come to our church for the first time. We hope it will help you know what to expect when you come, and to feel comfortable and at home with us.
There is a car park at Cox Green Community Centre, where our church is based. There is usually plenty of space for normal Sunday services, including some disabled parking spaces near the entrance to the Centre. If there is a baptism during the service with a large baptism party coming, parking may be more difficult. There is also a car park just beyond the library on the Centre site where there should be spaces on Sundays. Parking is available in side streets near the Community Centre.
The Community Centre and our church have disabled access for wheelchair users. There is an audio loop and sound system in the church, and we also have large print hymn books and service books for those who need them. Please ask.
There are toilet, disabled toilet and baby-changing facilities situated just off the entrance hall at the Community Centre. Those who are welcoming people at the door will be happy to direct you.
When to arrive
Ideally you should aim to arrive at least five to ten minutes before the service. There will be someone at the door to welcome you and give you any books and leaflets you will need for the service. If you are not sure where to sit, do ask one of our Welcomers to help you. On the first Sunday of the month (our All Age Service) or when there is a baptism, the service is projected onto a screen, so no books are needed.
Before the service starts
Usually we prepare for our worship by singing some hymns or worship songs for a few minutes before the service starts. You are welcome to join in, or just use the time to be quiet and pray.
Children of all ages are very welcome at our church - we are delighted to have been awarded the Family Friendly Church Awarded, presented on Sunday 19th March 2017 by Bishop Andrew.
There is a Sunday School, known as ‘Sunday AM!’, which meets every week apart from the first Sunday of the month when it is our All Age Service. Any children attending our church are welcome to join the children and leaders of ‘Sunday AM’. Pre-school children should be accompanied by a parent or other responsible adult. Parents are also welcome to stay with school age children if they, or their children wish.
Children are also welcome to stay in church for the whole service if they prefer. There is a room just off the Victory Hall, where our services are held, which is set up with soft toys and books for young children. Parents may use this facility whenever they need to during the service, particularly if young children are becoming restless or need some ‘time out’.
We also have bags with soft toys and books etc that can be taken into the service for pre-school children. Do ask for one when you arrive.
During each service there is usually a collection taken to support the work of the church. If you are a taxpayer, we would be grateful if you would use a Gift Aid envelope for your offering, as this enables us to claim the tax back. Gift Aid envelopes can be found on the table as you go into church.
You are welcome to take communion if you are confirmed, or if you would usually take communion at your own church. If you do not wish to receive communion, do come up and receive a blessing. It is helpful if you bring your service sheet with you as an indication for those giving communion. If you prefer you can simply remain in your seat and use the time for prayer.
We are very happy to bring communion to anyone who may have difficulties coming up to the altar to receive communion.
If possible, let us know before the service starts, or speak to one of those directing people at communion.
After the service
There is usually tea, coffee and squash served after the service. Do stay on if you can, as we would love to meet you. Ask a member of the congregation to take you into coffee if you would feel more comfortable going with someone.
